Peripheral I/O

Parallel and serial ports are, in a way, system devices. The only physical manifestation they have is the port connectors and cables they use to attach to the motherboard (and ATX form factor boards don't even have the cables). These connections should be cleaned and checked along with the motherboard and other internal components, as described here.
