[ The PC Guide | System Optimization and Enhancement Guide | Overclocking: The Dissenting Opinion ] Overclocking Risks and Rewards Most of the controversy surrounding overclocking is related to the risk-reward issue: what is the real benefit of overclocking, and what is the true cost? This section takes a look at these issues in what I hope is a reasonably objective manner. Overclocking is inherently risky because in doing so you are attempting to operate your hardware in a way that it was not designed to work. Circuit timing in a PC is very delicate in some cases, and you can cause very subtle problems by tinkering with it. In the sections below I try to look more specifically at what risks there are with overclocking.
