Scan for File System Errors to Free Lost Space and Improve Data Integrity

One of the most important--and yet simple--ways to optimize the performance of your hard disk's file system is to scan it regularly for errors. Over time, errors can creep up in the file system, which can lead potentially to lost data, file corruption, and also wasted disk space.

I recommend that you scan for file system errors regularly, using a tool such as Microsoft's SCANDISK or Norton's Disk Doctor. This should be part of your preventive maintenance routine, and can be automated if you use the correct tools.
