Remove Automatic Virus Protection

Some antivirus packages include automated memory-resident programs that monitor system activity and automatically scan files for viruses when they determine the potential for a virus exists. This provides enhanced virus security, but unfortunately slows the system down due to all the scanning. You can disable this feature to see if performance improves.

Warning: Disabling automatic protection "lowers one of your shields" in terms of your overall virus protection strategy. Make sure you employ other measures to compensate, or you increase your risk of infection. At a minimum, ensure that you are doing at least weekly scans of your whole hard disk if you have no automated protection. See here for a more complete coverage of the subject.
