Floppy disk found but has no boot sector on it

Explanation: The system found a floppy disk to try to boot, but couldn't load the operating system from it because it could not find a boot sector on it.

Diagnosis: The most common cause of this problem is trying to boot a floppy disk before formatting it. Note that this is not the same as booting a non-bootable floppy disk; any formatted disk has a boot sector, even one that is not bootable. The non-bootable one just doesn't have the operating system files on it. See here for more on boot disks.

Recommendation:

  • Boot the system from a proper boot disk, or remove the floppy disk from the drive and boot from the hard disk.
  • If the problem persists despite the fact that the boot disk is known to be working, treat as a floppy disk problem.
