Hi everybody !
It seems that I have a serious problem with my Hard disk (Western Digital Caviar 1,083 GB, Model: 21000).
When I turn on the power or after reset, I get the message "hard disk failure (80)". And the Hard disk is spinning noisy like an old motor.
I have tried anything regarding Bios, connections, jumpers, etc. but nothing happends !
There is anybody who had a similar problem and how get solved ?!?
Thanks,
Nikos
Presuming the H.D. is stuck, is there any possibility of recovering the stored data?

i would say that your hard drive has crashed, the read/write head on the hdd is scraping on the surface of the disk. if you can boot up, get as much data transfered as possible, cause it will only get worse if it crashed. i dont think you can recover data from a disk that has completely crashed.

If you are getting that eror message and grinding, scraping or other unusual noises you, most likely, now own a paperweight.....

Gee,
I was never expectin that the end of a 6-year old "relationship" would come so suddenly and "sadendly" !!
Without any warning...
I lost all my data...
And now I am crashed too, not just the hard disk !!
And if I open it?!?!
(It sounds like a pure "tomb-raiding"-not the game - to me!!!)

If the disk is still spinning, you can use a program like Lost and Found to recover data from it...if not, there are professional data recovery services available, but they are expensive, so it depends on how important the contents of your hd are...
The longer you use it in this condition though, the more likely data will become corrupted, so if you're thinking about sending it somewhere, I would stop using it immediately...

When all else fails, read the instructions.
Six years is pretty good for a hard drive. And what Hired said about the services holds true for the recovery apps...don't use it anymore until you decide what to do with it, get the recovery program and are ready to run it. Openning it up will only yeild some very strong magnets and not much else...they are assembled in a "clean room" and even the smallest amount of dust can destroy it and the there would be no hope of recovery.

Good point about not using it until you use the recovery program, mjc...I got a free copy of lost and found when I got my APC and I never used it...then my dad erased his entire collection of digital photos from X-mas (over 100 pictures), so I gave it to him...it took a few hours, but it got back ALL of the pictures, the only hitch was that for some reason it removed the "g" from the .jpg file extension on a few pictures...once he renamed them though, they opened fine...

OK...A while back when I first joined www.techrepublic.com (http://www.techrepublic.com) (free) there was an article for download that had over "200 ways to revive a hard drive" (at least long enough to get the data). Some of the suggestions are funny, but they have worked for people. I will put the link to the article here, but you may have to sign-up to get to it. If the link doesn't work, once you've signed up just search for the phrase above that is in the "'s Good luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
