I'm attempting to run scandisk, but at cluster 743,000 of 1,250,837 my computer locks up. I tried to defrag, but it says I have errors and must run scandisk first. I'm also getting scandisk recommendations during boot up but with the same problem. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with my post in anouncements-site problems. Otherwise, my machine runs fine. any Suggestions?

I saw your post there and was wondering if I was having similar problems. If you look on the main forum page, it says I posted there too, but my post is not there.
Did you try running Scandisk in Safe mode? I just looked at MSKB, and found a couple of articles on Scandisk problems, but doubt if they're applicable.
Norton or worm? (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q274/8/41.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=Scandisk&rnk=75&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=W98)

yawningdog what make and model of HD is this? You could get lucky and get a good utility from the maker's site...I know IBM has an excellent diagonstic tool for their HDs. Aside from the effects of a virus it sounds like actual bad sectors that need marking or even a failing HD. Now Pete has all the switches at hand but have you tried running from Safe mode like kay suggested? How about from DOS. Is this the thorough scandisk? Might also want to check for a loose cable connection.
kay I see now what you are talking about with your post in the announcements-site problems forum. It says you were the last one, but the post is not there. I dumped the history and temp internet files and closed the browser and still don't see it. I guess it's these kinda things that provide fun & frustration for all of us http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Yeah, okay, I really should have thought to run scandisk in safe mode. I did, it worked, thanks Kay http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Cool! I was going to suggest running scandisk in DOS mode, either from Command Prompt or boot disk.
For future reference, the unattended scandisk command line bassvax referred to is:
scandisk x:_/autofix_/nosummary_/surface with spaces in place of the underscores, of course. That runs a thorough scandisk with no user intervention required, fixes errors too.

Whew! I am relieved. You said something about possibly getting a bad file from here, and I am an idiot running around the Net without protection and was afraid I was about to pay for it. Especially after reading the MSKB articles.
Yes, Sir! I have a previous post of yours, Pete, copied and printed so that I know the exact command line for the unattended Scandisk from DOS. My husband used it not too long back and it worked wonders on a old, cranky hard drive.
