Try it from DOS. Boot using the [F8] key and choose Command Prompt Only At the C:\> prompt type:
scandisk_c:_/autofix_/nosummary_/surface
Using spaces in place of the underscores ( _ ) used here. This runs an unattended scandisk, telling it to fix errors, and without the pop up box asking if you want to fix any errors it finds.

To run scandisk on all drives, use scandisk_all instead of scandisk_c: and include the parameters.

Here's a guide to doing just that:
SCANDISK
Use Explorer (Start - Find - File/Folder) to search for files named *.* in the folder c:\windows\temp. This needs to be completely emptied of all files and folders.
(choose Edit: select all, then File: delete)

Find any files named file*.chk and delete them.

Locate the "Internet Explorer" icon on your desktop (or start menu). Right click, choose properties. Click delete files.
Then, choose settings/view files and delete all cookies.

Empty Recycle Bin.

Go into safe mode: while your computer is booting, tap the
F8 key at a rate a little faster than 1 tap per second. This will bring up a DOS-looking menu where you'll be able to select Safe Mode.
* If you run ScanDisk from outside of safe mode, you must turn off screensaver, if you use it. And you must turn off all power management features (sleep mode), if you use that.
(It has been recommended not to use power management.)
And you must turn off any anti-virus programs (i.e. edit autoexec.bat to add "rem" in front of any lines which refer to Norton/McAfee/whatever).

Starting ScanDisk from Safe Mode is the best & easiest way.

Run ScanDisk from Start - Program - Accessories - System Tools. Choose autofix and under Advanced, checkmark "invalid dates", "invalid names" and "report MSdos mode errors".

An average scan may take about two hours.

DEFRAG
Run ScanDisk, as above.

Go to Safe Mode, if not already there. From Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - choose Disk Defragmenter.
You will be asked to select a drive, then click ok.
There will be a status indicator so you can see how far along the process is.
You must not use the computer (do not disturb the mouse or anything) during Defrag or it will stop and start all over again.
If you click on the button "Show Details", you can watch the progress of everything being moved and organized. After defragging, data will be stored more efficiently... all the bytes from one program will end up in one place without gaps, instead of having bits and pieces here and there on your disk.
Defrag could take anywhere from 2 hours to 8 hours or longer, depending on how often it is used or whether it ever has been used. Many people recommend starting it before going to sleep, so that it may run all night.

When shutting down the computer from Safe Mode, there is a screen that says "It is ok to turn off your computer now". No cause for alarm, it is supposed to be there.

Once everything is "contiguous" your programs may run much faster.

"Another thing you want to remember about defragging is that you need to have disk space. The util needs to have an area it can put the bytes it's moving around. If your disk is near capacity (say 75% or more), most derag programs will not be able to do a complete job. Some will act as though they are working then say it can't be done until more disk space is freed up.
One of the best ways to defrag, if you have the equipment to do so, is to make a backup of your data (documents, spread sheets, databases, high scores, anything that you created). Erase it all off the disk, and get rid of the temp files (including your browser's cache). Run the defrag util (Norton, Windows, Execusoft). Then restore your data from the backup."
