So, it may be my turn at the hands of ME.

System specs.
Ibuiltit http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
Matsonic MS8308d/e
AMD Duron 800
128 Mgb PC100
WD 10 Gig.
Acer 16x DVD

DVD has disapeared!!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif It shows in BIOS correctly, it shows during startup correctly. It used to show in Device manager correctly.
It does not show under My Computer and does not respond to inserting a disk.
I went to device manager in safe mode and removed it. Restarted and no reinstall. No show under My Computer or Device manager.
Reinstalled drivers anyway, show completion but no drive. Only conflicts in DM is "Primary and Secondary" IDE controller.

"This device is either not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed (code 10)"
Could this be due to VIA drivers?
I have some research to do when I get home but wanted to post this before I left.
Thanks gang http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

The controller conflict is the most likely suspect, remove both in Safe Mode, reboot and Windwos should reinstall them, if that's the problem it should take care of it.

Thanks Pete, tried that,
It wont let me remove the IDE controllers, something along the lines of them being a part of a bigger world or a grouped device http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif . I could remove the VIA PCI bus IDE controller, but it did not remove the primary and secondary controllers. The VIA would reinstall normaly and I still have a conflict.
The primary and secondary do not show conflict in Safe Mode.

Basically I found that if you can't remove it from DM then some registry hacking is in order...you can hunt down the related keys and manually remove them then reinstall the drivers (VIA 4 in 1)... you may also get by with a 4 in 1 update.

Latest 4in1 is v.433 www.via.com.tw (http://www.via.com.tw)

Trying to remember here, I think that they did include the EIDE controller drivers.

May all your dealings in life be win/win!

Thanks all,
I downloaded the drivers lastnight (the ones with EIDE) and I will install them today.
One thing I forgot to mention is that this was a fully functioning machine for the last few months. DVD was used regularly for loading software, games, music, etc...
Only reason it was noticed now is, my kids tried to play a game and it would not work.
Thanks
Frank
