Help ! Please.

I bought a new hard drive recently, i installed it but my pc couldn't detect it so i tried to be smart and uninstall my primary hard disk to check the jumper and due to the structure of my pc's casing, i have to take out the CD ROM before take out the primary hard disk. After that i fixed them back, CD ROM to IDE 2, primary hard disk and the new hard drive to IDE1. But when i turn on the power, the monitor gives me a black screen and "OVERRIDE" message in green color??!

So I turn off my pc and unfixed all the hard drives and the CD ROM then fixed back one by one and found out if i install only one, say if i fixed back my primary hard drive, it's back to normal. If fixed the new hard drive, it asks me to insert the system disk (i haven't done formatting yet), but i can't do anything because it won't run if i fixed back my CD-ROM with either one hard drive.

Can anyone help me to solve this ?

my pc : pentium 166mmx
primary hard drive: Quantum Big Foot
new hard drive: WD75
CD-ROM : 48x
chipset : Intel 82430 VX
os : win98

now in order to use my pc, i have took out all and left my primary HD only.

Thanks a lot in advance.

When you install a new hard drive in that system you probably have to go into the BIOS for the system to detect it (the newer system will automatically detect it). Before doing that make sure that your master/slave jumpers are set correctly on all drives. I would suggest getting the old hard drive and cd-rom working properly first and then adding the new hard drive.

To get into the BIOS look at the screen. when you first turn it on it should tell you to hit <del> or one of the F key to enter BIOS. you have to hold the key at startup to enter. Once in BIOS look for "detect IDE drives" and go from there.

Be careful when working in the BIOS, errors are not easy to correct.

The board you're using has the Intel 430 VX chipset, so it's not likely to support hard drives larger than 8GB. That's the same chipset I'm using. It also won't cache more than 64MB memory...so if your new drive is larger than 8GB you probably won't be able to use it at all, the computer won't even boot once it's installed, at least as primary IDE drive...

For getting it started, you're on the right track, one thing at a time. Get everyting working again as it originally was, then double check the jumper settings on both drives, and add the new one, if it's not too large. Some drives use a second setting for use in dual drive systems, watch for that on the original and new drives. If you need to find drive parameters or jumper settings, go to my site posted below, and look in the top link, Trish's, in the Specs/Jumper Settings section.

Cromwell is correct about the BIOS setting, the drive has to be recognized in BIOS before the computer can use it. The PC Guide's section on BIOS Settings (http://www.pcguide.com/ref/mbsys/bios/set/index.htm) might be helpful.

I must have been half asleep when I posted this last night...sorry about the messed up link.

Thank you Cromwell & Paleo Pete, wel my drive is ok now. As u guys said, i installed one by one back as the previous way, i finally got it and the 2 drives worked well in my pc now. I have found the reason : I've wrongly fixed the cable in revert way. So i know the next time if the message "OVERRIDE" exist on monitor screen, i know what to do then.

Now the problem is my Bios can't detect the 2ndary HD, I have to use manually detect and save for everytime i start my PC. I'll go to check the Bios setting.

FYI, i've check the menu, my motherboard can support Hard Drive for 8.4G in
LBA mode and Ram can up to 128Mb.

Thank you, from Pauline

I've got the VX chipset, and found this on the Dell support site:

"Can I Upgrade the Memory on My Dell® Dimension® M200s to 128 MB of RAM?

Yes, it is possible to upgrade the memory on a Dimension M200s to 128 MB (megabytes) of RAM (Random Access Memory). However, you may experience some performance limitations because Windows® 95 and the Intel® Pentium® I processor only cache up to 64 MB of RAM. A system with this configuration and 128 MB of RAM may slightly improve performance for some applications while producing performance degradation in others. You may want to consider upgrading the entire system to one with a current Intel processor and new components that will more effectively enhance your overall computing experience, rather than pursuing a memory upgrade above 64 MB of RAM."
