I borrowed my friends SONY VIAO PC to use its CDR-W drive. Once disconnecting the drive from its original PC, im not able to install it onto another PC(athlon with windows 98). I tried to connect it in slave mode to HDD , but as soon as I connect the bus the system stops responding(it doesnot hang the system coz as soon as I disconnect the bus from CDR-W drive system responds). Also it doesnot let the system boot.
Getting tired of this strange behavior i tried to install it back to its original SONY VIAO system but there also it behaves the same. I am unable to understande this problem.
Can anybody tell me what could the problem be and possible solutions?
thanx

Hello ritesh,

Welcome to the PC Guide Forums!

I need to reread your post and grab a better understanding of what's happening. However, I wanted to get this back to you ASAP...it sounds as though you are removing the device "hot," meaning that you've not powered down the computer completely before so doing.

You could definitely damage things in this manner! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

no I am not trying to hotswap this drive. i will tell you the exact procedure i followed.
1> I turned off my PC, and set the CDR-W in slave mode
2> connected the power and bus to drive
3>switched on the system
4> the system carries on with initial memory check but hangs when it needs to identify the IDE drives
5> if i disconnect the drive at this point it instantly identifies the HDD and carries on with usual booting procedure.

also
if i 'hot connect' the drive the PC stops responding but doesnot completely hang as it again starts respondingg as soon as i disconnect the drive.

what could be the problem?

Hello ritesh,

I guess I wasn't clear about working "hot" as I wanted to impress that either connecting or disconnecting you're playing with fire and could damage not only the drive but also the motherboard. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

Connecting the drive "hot" has more than likely created "Ghost" drivers and complicated the problem.

You want to connect and disconnect powered down!

Which ever system you are going to try to put this drive into you will want to get into SAFE MODE with the device previously removed. REMOVE all the devices that show up under the CD. Shut down...insert the card and reboot allowing Windows to locate and load the drivers.

Would you keep us posted?

that is what the problem is, i shut down the system and reboot with the drive inserted the reboot stalls!!(and doesnt even identify the HD!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
as soon as i disconnect the drive reboot continues
