http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif OK here is my problem, I have a somewhat new computer (few months) that shouldn't slow down at all. Whenever I leave Windows on stand by and come back and hour later the computer is very lagged and I have to restart. Also if I just use the computer for an hour it gets very lagged and I have to restart. And finally if playing a game for 20-30 min it does the same thing. Please help fix this.

Specs: Win ME, 192 MB ram, 32 MB Diamond Stealth III, 850 MHz AMD proccessor, and 30 GB HD.

What could the problem be? Please help me!

Does the unit ever "freeze up" completely? Or does it just
operate slowly?

If you check discussions on Deja (http://www.deja.com) and use a search string like: +windows +me +slow, you will see that a lot of people are having similar problems with Windows ME. The best fix seems to install Windows 98 or 98SE, with SE being generally preferred. There are ME features that can be disabled, but I found ME not to be worth any further effort on my part.

Fisrt of all since it is only a couple of months old take it back to the the store where you bought it and have them fix it, use your warranty. However if it is homebuilt the first thing I would do is remove the case and have a fan blowing on it. Remember this is only temporary. You can then hopefully narrow it down to a more specific component. As to WinMe I've heard it can be a resource hog. Maybe someone else can help you with reguards to that.

Ron

P.S. If it's covered by warranty take it back and don't let anyone else touch it as it will most likely void the warranty.

The warrenty is prob alreay void because i had a cdrw installed, and a new sound card. Any other ideas? Also what things can be disabled?

Try using EndItAll (http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,,0011NB,.html) to shut down non-essential programs and then try a game. If it runs OK, then it is a clue that ME is hogging resources.

Here is a link to Windows 9x/ME Tweak Guide (http://www.3dspotlight.com/tweaks/windows/index.shtml).

If you reconfigure your machine back to the way it was purchased, I'm sure you've still got a valid warranty. I just got my IBM Thinkpad back from warranty repair. Before I sent it off, I needed to put the original hard drive back in and pull out the extra memory I had installed. This was discussed with the tech at the help desk beforehand.

Running the PCPitStop (http://www.pcpitstop.com/) online diagnostic may be able to help identify problems that affect performance.

Why don't you simply try to defrag your HDD ? See that helps.

Have you tried updating drivers for video or sound card?

Are you overclocking your video card?

If you are you may want to try setting it back to the default setting.

Does your machine have any kind of temperature sensors or any way of checking what the internal case temp may be?

Is your power supply fan working properly (always on)? Can you feel air moving out of the vents on the case? Do you have any of the vents blocked?

If it seems like I'm on a heat kick I am. I've had too may other electronic items do strange things when they get too warm. An overclocked anything will generate more heat so that is why I suggest returning to default values. Also ME sometimes has trouble with certain games, period, because of the way it handles DOS (extremely restricted) and there may be a patch or update for that game. Most games will run under ME but some older ones that require alot of DOS memory (1st 640K) are the ones that have problems. (There is a compatability list in WIN maybe System directory check it and see if what you are trying to play is on it.)

When you put it into standby does everything shut down?

When it comes out of standy does everything seem like it comes back on?

Hi and Welcome to a fellow "Baltimoron" http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

u and I have very similair systems me: amd athlon 800Mhz, 128 ram, 30 gig hdd.....however I have Win98se as opposed to ME.
(mines a compaq)trouble waitin to happen ?? I hope not VERY fast and reliable ..so far http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Try MemTurbo (http://www.MemTurbo.com/) this could help

*note* I use pcpitstop as well, be careful to not get the Panda antivirus.. many have had problems with it (me)

oh and also if yours IS a compaq, (newer one) you have some additional things to do to make ur pc see its full potential.. Im thinking of creating a Compaq new user's web page http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Not much to add, evrything's been covered pretty well already, but wanted to note that I have tried Panda Antivirus too, and it crashed two win98 machines BIG TIME...took me two days to figure it out the first time, knew how to handle it the second. I agree with sea, stay away from Panda...
