Is there supposed to be a small slit (about 1/8" long) on an IDE cable? It's an 80 pin UDMA100 cable. I've never seen this before, but then I've never had an 80 pin cable either.

Sorry, I mean 80 wire/40 pin.

Are you sure it's not a 40 pin and 80 wire? All that I've looked at do not have a slit but i will say the cable in my system since i got it back has a slit in it and it was not there before i took it in for repairs?sorry didn't spot your follow up post http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Will my Zip100 drive work on an 80 wire cable, or does it need to stay on a standard 40 wire?

Jumby I don't have a zip so I'm not sure didn't it com with documentation papers? or count the pin holes and see if they match up I know it's a pretty lame answer but it gets you back in the main stream. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I take it this is an internal zip drive.I would think if the pin holes match up it should work couldn't hurt to try all it should do is not either be recognised or not power up?but if the connector does not fit don't force it to.

It does work; I've been using it. I'm just wondering if using a newer 80 wire cable going into the zip and then into the hard drive is going to work ok. I guess I can try and see what happens. I used the regular 40 pin with UDMA 33 hard drive, but now with a UDMA100 and with the newer 80 wire cable, will that cable work ok with the zip drive.

The extra 40 wires are ground lines; so you should have no problems using it with a ZIP, as it still uses the same 40 pin IDE interface.

Actually you may see an improvement over it's original performance because now there is less chance of data corruption.

The newer faster drives had to have some extra grounding because their data transfer rates were creating extra signal noise; hence the extra ground wires ( now 2 for every one data wire ), these cables can also beneit older IDE drives by cutting down on the signal noise to data ratio.
