Tried reading most of the previous questions. I hope you haven't answered this already.
I purchased a new computer (PC Flyer) off ebay. Bad deal from the start. Took seller 5.5 weeks to get it to me and now nothing but problems.
Worst problems first.
At first (first few times) it would boot okay. But CD-rom wouldn't work. Light stays on, but can't read. Now won't boot to C. Makes noise of "ssssh-clunk) coming from hard drive. Will boot to emergency disk, but when I change to c: drive, windows 98 isn't there (and says C is a "ramdisk")?????
Tells me that the CD driver is there, but can't find CD-rom.
Could this be a virus?
If virus, does anyone make a detection program that is on 3.5"? Also, if I install new hard drive and or CD-rom, how do I get new drivers on if they are on CD's?
Have a few other problems;
When it would boot, it read my C as having .97 gig and a D as .>97 gig also, the drive is 8.4gig (seagate, don't know if it's a SCSI or IDE)
Hope I have given enough info to get started.
Thanks for the help. I learned a lot just reading others posts.

New info, I read some more post and someone said to disconnect everything but the M/B and the hard drive. I did this and it started to boot. It gave a low cmos or bios? battery warning. I hit F1 and looked around and then exited and it booted. Tried it several times and it still booted okay, but no low battery warning.
Is Cd-rom bad (or is there a way to check it?) or a conflict (and a way to check it)?? I did try a different flat cable, as both the hard drive and the CD-rom are on the same cable.
If I have to install a new CD-rom, how do I load the drivers if it is on a CD?
What about the low battery warning?
Thanks

Try a new battery first. You can get them at most drug stores. It's probably a CR032. It's about the size of a nickel. There are some other things, like the clunking sound that are kind of wierd, but first things first.

could be conflict tween HD and CD. either disconnect CD or make sure it's
on a different cable (secondary IDE preferred).
also, I prefer to boot clean to a floppy (press f5 as OS is booting) then check c: with scandisk, but they may have used a disk mangler...er manager.

lots more to do to be sure, but first, get the scandisk goin on the c: with CD disconnected, that will help see if HD is ok or not
