I have 'disturbed' my PC to replace a Modem cable. Now, when I boot up I get a green desktop background instead of the original cloud setting. Attempting to reset in the display control panel is unsuccessful. Ideas please.

What version of Windows? Replacing the registry might be in order, but I have to know the version to go any further. Might be a setting in system.ini or win.ini too...

And I would run a good virus scanner soon, and consider the possibility that you picked up a trojan somewhere...

If you had everything...Where would you put it?

I had a similar recent experience. I'm still not sure what the problem was, but Windows seemed to have made some behind-the-scenes adjustment of the display driver due to the video card or cable being dislodged. I solved the problem by going to the device manager and removing the display adapter device. When I restarted Windows, it re-installed the driver and I was able to adjust settings as before.

First make sure your video cable (and maybe even the video card) are correctly plugged and seated.

Select "my computer", then "control panel", then "system", then "device manager" tab. Click the "+" next to "display adapter". Click the entry that appears beneath "display adapter" to highlight it, then click the "remove" button. It will ask to confirm, then for you to restart Windows. Do both, and let Windows come up. You should see Windows locate the display card and monitor hardware and reinstall the drivers as it comes up. If this fails try re-installing the software for your video card (if you have it). I suspect that windows is loading it's vanilla driver for your display adapter.
