all of my sound icons are set to come on yet I have none. When I log on
there is no sound at all(you got mail) I have checked my speakers and my
jacks and everything is the way it is suppose to be. I did have sound about
a week ago and do not know exactly what has happened. Sometimes when I try
to use things with sound I will get a message that my soundcard is being used
by another program but I can not find out what is going on. I would
appreciate any help you could offer, Thank you very much.

It's a software drivers issue from what you have said....Go to Start/ Settings/Control Panel/System/and double click Device Mgr....go to the Sound,Video & Game Controlers tab & click....either the sound card will have an "!" or it wont be present or it will show up as a ? in "other devices"....post back what you find & we'll get ya going....unless of course, you're sound card died...in that case you will need a new one.

I followed your directions and in my sound, video area there wasn't a ?or!.
My soundcard wasnt even listed in this area. In other devices I have a ? in
front of PCI Bridge and a ? in front of PCI Serial bus. I don't know what to
do from here so let me know where I should go now. Thank you for all your
help.

Anyone have any ideas about this problem?

The ? you see means that system has a problem. Try double clicking on it and it should bring up the troubleshooter, and maybe tell you how to fix it.
For the sound card, boot into Safe Mode, open Device Manager and see if the sound card is listed. If so, remove it, reboot and let Windows find and reinstall it. That might or might not fix the problem, but something in the PCI system is having problems, and from what it sounds like, something is stepping on the IRQ for the sound card.
Have you installed any new hardware lataly that could have affected the configurations? That could be causing the conflict. you migth have to remove the sound card in Safe Mode then move it to a different slot to get it to work again, but if you have installed any new hardware that's affecting it I would say move that to a different slot instead.

If you dont have the sound card showing up in "Sound Video and game controllers" in the Device Mgr. then go to "Add Hardware" and let Win find it again.
