Problem:
When I try playing MP3 (or Digital CD Audio) the sound gets choppy when I use other applications. It appears to happen when the CPU usage gets close to 100%. On a side note (perhaps related)...My burner also gets buffer underun errors if I go above 2X write (and I'm not using the PC at all while burning).

Attempted:
Lots...Updated drivers. Adjusted video settings (Lower color, resolution and refresh rates). IDE settings to DMA (were PIO!).

I have just started using this machine recently (ie This never worked properly)

Did you buy this computer or build it? The system should be ok for the things you mention...the reason I ask, is that when you buy a prebuilt computer, there tend to be a lot of prgrams installed that run all the time and eat up your memory and clock cycles...(although since you're using win2000 you probably installed it yourself)

What runs on your system at startup? You can check with under the startup folder in the programs menu...or with windows task manager...hit ctrl+alt+del and then select task manager...under the applications tab you should see all programs that are running...try killing some and then see if the problems still occur...

I had a P2 450 system w/128 mb of ram that wouldn't burn audio cds faster than 2X, but it would burn data at 4X...what kind of burner is it? If you're using the correct drivers and software for win2000...the only thing I can come up with other than making sure no other programs are wasting your resoirces is trying more ram...2000 likes ram...

I have tried removing all programs from the startup...no improvement at all. I just noticed that simply typing this response while listening to mp3 causes some choppy sound (scrolling causes even worse sound)!!

Ignore the Burner problem. It looks like the PIO->DMA fix I put in recently has fixed this problem!

Have you tried using windows update to look for drivers? That fixed the problem with my sound card...none of the drivers supplied by Diamond worked properly, but the MS ones did...

Of course, that only works when MS has made drivers for the device...if not, you might need a new card...is yours supposed to be compatible with 2000?

Ok, I just checked the 2000 compat. list, your card is on there...so...got me...have you installed SP1 yet? good luck

Have you checked the mobo manufacturer site...could be certain bios settings, irq assignments/conflicts that need to be adjusted...you could even try (and I don't know why this works) moving the cards around in the pci slots...unless it's an integrated sound card...

Integrated sound card.
