ive tried to install a new modem the pc is recognising that its there and its put it on comm port4 but whenever i try to test it to see if it workd i keep getting an error message saying can not open comm

winmodem? I'd almost bet on it...They have to be installed using the setup program on the driver disk, not by the add new hardware wizard in Windows.

Check BIOS and see if COM2 is enabled, it's on the same IRQ as COM4. Disable it. It will be serial port 2F8.
