Hello All,
I am having a video issue with the following system:

Toshiba Satellite 4005CDS PII 233
32MB
4GB HD
Dual boot: OpenLinux and Win98

The system is set up to dual boot. After the bootmanager comes up and I choose Windows (done by typing Win at prompt), I get the Windows logo screen (this is the usual case at boot, nothing new here) followed by the C: prompt in the upper left corner of the screen (again the usual case). Next the screen goes black, but the desktop does not appear . The hard drive turns, and I believe Win loads, but without a display. I can Alt+F4 and get the "Windows is now shutting down" logo, so I assume (assuming is a big mistake)that Win did load. Also, I can boot to Linux just fine, that rules out the display. I have used a boot floppy and can get to the C:, but I do not know which Windows file I am looking for. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Have you just upgraded from a Voodoo card to a Geforce by any chance ? , I had this same problem and it's quite common.

Titch,
Thank you for the reply. This a laptop that has not had any hardware upgrades applied to it. This problem started after the power cord was accidently unplugged while the sytem was booting. The laptop has a battery that it defaults to when the power goes off or is mistakenly unplugged.

Can you try to get into SAFE MODE after you prompt to load Windows?

Whyzman,
Thanks for the reply, but I have tried f8 at boot and could not see safe mode either. I even went as far as to get in MSDOS.SYS and insert BootKeys=1 and a couple of other lines trying to force my way to safe mode with no sucess. Any other suggestions would be appreciated before I am forced to Fdisk.

It was working and now it is not? Or, you've set this up and it has never been successful?

Just checked Microsoft you might want to have a look-see at Q179756 It deals with dual boot issues with Windows products, but may have application with dual boots and another OS.

Whyzman,
Thanks again for the reply. In a moment of anger, I pulled the trigger. No, I did not go Elvis and unload the 44 on it, but I did Fdisk her. I did manage to get a couple of files that were important off of her and then I did a re-install. That took care of the issue, whatever it was. About once a year is the norm for having to clean every thing off and start over again. Funny how Linux does not require that. Many thanks for your efforts to assist.

House cleaning is good! There's actually a book out: Clutters last stand!I often wonder how many useless files we accumulate, or lose track of. Or, driver installs that wind up with duplicate files for some reason or another. I suppose before we got into the gig HDDs folks were a little bit more festidious house cleaning precious storage space. You seem to know your system...glad to hear you didn't perform your own version of disk fragmenting with the 44. LOL Glad everything is A-Okay!

May all your dealings in life be win/win!
