Hello,
I am new to this forum and I am hoping one of you smart people out there can help me with my video card problem. I will try to explain this as best as I can, but I am not all TOO technically adept, so please bear with me. I recently tried to install a brand new S3 Savage 2000 64mb video card onto my PC, which is a P3 550mhz with 128mb ram. I plugged in the card to my AGP slot and installed the software, but when I did the required restarting of the system, my screen would go completely blank right after the windows98 startup screen was displayed. And the startup screen itself was displayed poorly, very low resolution or something, almost a CGA look to it. I have had no problems with any other cards I've installed previously, a Voodoo3000, and the original card, a Diamond Viper V770. I tried downloading a supposed updated driver for the Savage, but this didnt seem to make a difference at all, as it did the exact same thing upon startup. Fine all the way up to the startup screen, then *click*, total blank. I can start my PC in safe mode, and that's about all, when trying to use this card. Might this be a hardware or software problem? Could it be my monitor? I don't know what else to add here, to help describe this problem. I would appreciate all and ANY comments or suggestions that anyone might have to help me solve this problem. Thanks!!

Go in to safe mode and under display adapters remove all of them(video cards:in device manager) and dont restart your cpu until you removed them all.Was your last card a agp or pci video card? After you restarted put in the drivers for your card.Windows should ask video card driver for then reboot see if that helps. Also go to display options and change your your resoultion to 16 or 32bit and then reboot. To find these options go to start/settings/display Then hit the settings tab and under color hit the down arrow and change it.Post back and give us the exciting conclusion or sequel.

Well, those wonderful suggestions seemed like a good idea to me. I tried them all but the problem remains unchanged. I do appreciate your trying to help, though. Would anyone know if the S3 Savage2000 is prone to having these kinds of problems? My last cards were also AGP cards, to answer your earlier question. If you, or anyone else who might be reading this, might have any other ideas or suggestions on finding a solution to this problem, no matter how farfetched they may seem, I'm all ears (or eyes, I should say)! Suggest away!! Thanks, everyone.

It might be something to do with windows 2000 and the savage go to microsoft.com and search there database for any patches or fixes. When you get to the site look under search and put in some key words such as savage or agp slot.Something like that.

You might want to try and see if there is a conflicting device. Head into the Device Manager>right click my Computer and then go down to Properties. Open the Device Manager and take a look at the Video Adapters. Click the plus sign and then highlight the Video Card underneath...then click on the Properties button...check the resources tab and see if there are any conflicting resources at the bottom.
You didn't mention which MB you are using. Since you are making it through the POST and then going haywire chances are that you could have an IRQ conflict with another device.

Thanks, I did try that, and in the Conflicting Device List there reads "No Conflicts".

Did you purchase your Savage from and OEM or retail. If retail you might want to go after their Tech-Support. Since it is their product that seems to have screwd things up...I'll bet they have a pretty good idea of why! I've had good results with Tech-support through my assembly and problems since all my components were retail. In the past when I simply purchased, the OEM's Tech-support usually took forever to get through and it was really the luck of the draw if I hit on someone who knew how to fix the problem, or spoke English I could understand!

Hello,
Thanks everyone for your help. I just decided to return the card. It was too much of a hassle to try and get to work properly (which it never did). And who wants to pay good money for that kind of trouble? I'm sure I will be posting here again soon, though. As my PC is an endless source of enjoyment, it's also an endless source of small and large frustrations!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gifThanks all!
