We installed a Maxi Studio Isis Sound Card four months ago. The sound on the computer and stereo were working fine until we unhooked the computer to put it on a new desk. We reconnected everything and since then, I have no sound from my PC speakers. I have read most of your messages here and tried everything suggested here and elsewhere. I still have sound through my stereo that is plugged into the sound card rack. The PC speakers are hooked up correctly. When I plug headphones into the sound out on the back of the computer, I get nothing. This is driving me nuts! Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Carol

Hello Carol,
Easy stuff first...on the system tray you will normally find a speaker lookin icon. Would you right click on that and open the VOLUME CONTROLS and check to see whether the PC SPEAKER has a check in the MUTE box?

Volume control was the first thing we checked. That is an easy thing to overlook. Thanks for the suggestion.

Carol,
Most often, since it was working before you moved things, I would follow up with what was moved. Just for the heck of it... (I've done this before) the sound card normally has a few plug-ins for things like : line-out, microphone, aux etc...it's easy to plug 'er into the wrong one...
Speaker power plugged in? If you're not on a power strip the tranny could be in a socket controlled by a light switch. Is there an LED on the speakers showing power?
Have you tried the speakers elsewhere to make sure they are operating?
Could be a faulty wire (wiggle the little buggers!!)
I would say statistically that 99% of the time if it was working before we messed with things...or, after we put the things back together we wonder how in the world we came up with spare parts! My brother-in-law always comes up with spare parts after doing a brake job...this has me concerned!

I've checked everything that I can think of that would possibly be loose or plugged in wrong. I tried another set of PC speakers and no luck. I know it makes perfect sense that it would be something related to the recent moving of the computer, but I am having no luck finding it. I wouldn't really care that much if I had sound on the PC speakers, but I want to put some of my old albums on CD and I sure can't do it with no PC sound. Again, thanks for your help.

Have you opened the case and checked to see if the sound card might have moved out of the socket a little?

Reid, that's an excellent observation!
Purchased a redi-built system a couple of years ago and the sound card was being pulled out of the socket by the screw that holds the card in at the back of the board. It was rocking ever so slightly...just enough to pull 'er out. When I "went in" I had but to touch it ever so slightly to engage.
Carol,
Not sure what all you have tried, but you might also, just for the fun of it, restart and go into SAFE MODE and go into device manager and remove the audio card, reboot and let Windows find it...something could be wacked with the drivers!
One thought...Open the Volume controls and select OPTIONS>Properties and make sure the check is in play and not record. If you have a microphone make sure that it's volume control is showing.
Ok, this might be completely off the wall...If you have a microphone hooked up...try going into your sound control panel and make sure the checks to mute are out of everything. Then, make sure the volumes are set to max on everything. Put the microphone in front of the speakers and then turn the volume control up on the speaker. You should get some aweful squealing. I know, I know...I'm going with the idea from someone who had a recent post regarding some irritating noise...with the solution to mute the microphone.
If someone else's speakers were not working either, than it would seem to be somewhere in power to the board or some control function has decided to take control. LOL
Would you explain a bit what you mean by your stereo plugged into the sound card rack and is working?

I haven't opened the case to check anything. I guess I was saving that as a last resort. Since I am getting sound from the sound card to my stereo speakers, I have assumed that the sound card must be secured, but I probably will end up checking it. Thanks for the input.

I went into SAFE Mode and removed the audio card a few days ago. No luck.
This sound card has an external rack that you can connect amplifiers, speakers and instruments to. The output is plugged into my stereo amplifier and I can get sound fine through the stereo speakers. If I can find the right connector/adapter at Radio Shack, I think I might be able to get the sound to go from the rack to the PC speakers. That would solve my problem. Thanks again for the help.

Carol,
What is the brand of your sound card? Are you saying that you are using your CD-ROM to output to your stereo amplifier? Do you have that plugged into the Line Out? Is that the same midi plug that your PC speakers use?
Usually there is a LINE OUT and then an AUXILIARY. Which spot do you have the PC speakers plugged into?
If you have the stereo plugged into the LINE OUT and your PC in to the AUXILIARY you would need to open your SOUND CONTROL go into options and make sure that you have a checkmark by the AUXILIARY to enable.

We finally have PC speaker sound. We bought cables and adapters to go from the sound card rack to the PC speakers. I still am puzzled why the other quit working. The PC speakers used to be plugged into the audio out in the back of the computer and they worked fine. I am just glad to have figured out a way to get the sound back.
The brand of the sound card is Guillemot Maxi Studio Isis. I don't use my CD-Rom for output to my stereo. The external rack plugs into the sound card and it has line outputs that plug into my stereo and the PC speakers are now plugged into the line outputs on the external rack.
I really appreciate all your help. It is great to be able to post a message when you need help and actually get a response.
