I have a compaq presario 5000 series with onboard video. I want to install a PCI video card. Can not disable onboard video in BIOS. Does anyone out there know how this is done.

Hi and Welcome,

Are you sure that there is no option in BIOS to disable the onboard video?

If that's true, then all you should have to do is install the new video card and hook the monitor up to it. Read the installation directions first. You will probably have to set the adapter to the Standard VGA type, then power down the computer, install the new video card, boot up and install the new video card drivers. Adjust resolution and screen size.

The installation of the new video card should override the onboard video, that is, the onboard video will be rendered disabled as soon as you start using the new video card.

Good luck and post back if further questions.

Just checked the BIOs again for the umteenth time does not allow for
change. System recognizes PCI card and driver when installed. Games
will not play smoothly. Could not find any conflicts. Pulling my
hair out over here.Would installing the card and letting the system
decide on the driver make a difference?

Try going into device manager and disabling the onboard video by "removing" it from all profiles I believe.

yep.

go to Device Manager>> expand the 'offending' sound card>> highlight it>> click properties>> disable in this hardware profile.

Hmm, I suppose that would work, to disable in DM.

I just installed an AGP card on a motherboard that had onboard video with no BIOS option to shut it off. The 'offending' onboard video was not even visible in DM in normal mode.

The less than desirable game play may have something to do with the PCI video card that you're using. How about letting us know what it is? Oh, and what driver are you using, the one that came supplied with the card, or something that you downloaded from the net?

Fill us in on that info and we'll go from there.

One more thing, remove the drivers for the onboard video in Add/Remove Programs. Maybe that will help a bit.
