View Full Version : win 98 won't load. 'localized text corrupt'. I'm getting rid of this board, cheap.

after posting a question here, I did successfully boot from floppy (couldn't set primary master on IDE 3,4 -- ctrl H has no effect, so set HD on IDE1). thanks,

but now, booting 'w/ CD support', run setup.exe from G: (my CD drive) won't load win98 files, and gives 'localized text missing or currupt, can't run scandisk'

so I tried booting off of shebang2, from a boot disk I created from boot disk.com -- and got 'couldn't find ntldr' at which point system (if you can call it that) hangs.

I think at this point I'm done with the kt7 board.

lastly, when I had both CD and CDrw on same IDE2 cable, the system listed CD as >(*&^5a*blk, or something like that, and the start up disk couldn't find CD drive.

Do the CD drives ID correctly if connected one at a time? I have seen inaccessible drives ID with garbage characters because of a defective ribbon cable.

The drives did recognize separately. And the garbage characters went away after reboot.

still not sure why ctrl-h doesn't work -- cant' get in to set ATA100 as the primary master.

BUT, I think it's a heat problem? Chip is running VERY hot ( I know this now). If so, what are my best options, and how do I know if the mobo gods have melted my t-bird.

Also, running on 250W enlight, but w/ few periph attached, I don't think it's a power problem.

Try another cable to attach to the CD Rom. As I have a Simular problem with
the same type of charters being displayed at Bootup. It was recommended that I try to replace the cable which I will do tonight when I get home
Try it before you junk the board.

I was all set to try the new cable, but noticed the heat on my CPU spiked to 80C on start up, so I shut down, and am ordering industrial strength cooling asap.

Do you mean your seeing that temp in the BIOS? If your getting 80C at boot then your heatsink is not seated properly on the CPU. Take it off, clean it and the CPU core with a clean cloth and some rubbing alcohol, apply a very thin layer of thermal paste and carefully replace the heatsink. Put it in position, press down, attach the clips and don't wiggle it around while your at it.
