Hi
I received Windows xp for Christmas and did a clean install. Everything worked well in Windows ME(dont look suprised). All went well except for the sound. I cannot play music cd's or hear any system sounds. Oddly enough I can get midi files to play. With the speakers on I can hear a ticking sound like an old wind up clock. I have checked all connections and reseated my card. I have installed the drivers on creative's web site and still no joy. My one though is IRQ. Both sound blaster and video card using same Irq 11. My system asus k7m-rm mother board. Sound blaster live value. 512 meg ram. 20 gig maxtor hard drive. Creative 52x cd. Hp 9300 cd rw. Hp 952c printer. usb scanner # 4470C. Athlon 550 Via chipset. Ati Rage fury Maxx 64 meg video card. Is there anything you can think of that would help? Much appreciated

I lied. Both Sound and video are using irq 9. My video card is listed twice.Once as a vga device and once as Device number 2.

Hi and Thank You.
I do have on board sound however it is disabled in the bios. I have had this card installed of almost one year now. It worked fine with windows ME. It does say Soundblaster disabled in my Bios. I was not sure what that meant, so I left it alone. My bios is american megatrends if that is any help to you. My system is about 2 years old and the bios has never been updated.

go to>> system properties>> hardware>> device manager>> right click on your onboard sound>> open properties.
From the drop down menu there choose "Do not use this device (disable)".
that should do it.

Hey,
Both my soundcard and video card are on the same IRQ and I have no problems. And, I cannot change the IRQ manually in Device Manager.
This sounds like a driver issue to me. Also, have you checked the sound properties to make sure everything is OK in that respect?
Have you been to the update site to see if by chance there is an updated XP driver for your soundcard?
Also, you could try booting in Safe Mode, then go to Device Manager and remove all instances of your soundcard that you see. Also remove any references to your onboard sound. Reboot in Normal mode and let Windows find and reinstall your soundcard. You should also use the Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to remove any drivers that are associated with the onboard sound. In fact, do that before you boot in Safe Mode to remove the sound listings.
I will be very surprised if this is not a driver issue. But if it isn't, you could try to manually assign IRQ's in BIOS, which would mean you have to disable the PNP operating system as being present. That should open up a listing of your PCI slots and there you can manually change the IRQ.
However, I really think you should pursue the driver issue first.
Good luck and post back with your progress.

I have totally removed my sound card in Device Manager. Did this in safe Mode. Windows kindly reinstalled after boot up. I still have the ticking sound coming from my speakers. Went to creative and downloaded the drivers for the sound card and It still does not work. Im going to try your final suggestion of reassigning resources to see where that takes me.

are you saying that your scanner works and your sound card doesn't??
this is the opposite of everyone elses XPeriences I have heard.
http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
had you looked in "Administrative Tools"- Component Services, or Event Viewer to see any errors reported??
I am getting many Zonealarm errors saying True Vector not loaded or not found but it still seems to work ok- I have tested and cannot even be pinged.
perhaps it is something simple?
had you made sure that the speakers work correctly?

Asus is very cranky about PCI card placement.
Please play musical chairs with your PCI cards
and this will re-assign an IRQ or two for you.
Shut down. Swap slots with a pair of cards. Re-boot.
Asus doesn't like the the sound card and the video
card placed next to each other. In neighboring PCI slots.
Need to try and get video to pick IRQ 5 if possible.
Pnp option needs to be enabled in BIOS. That option is
disabled if you have added hardware that causes
boot failures.
The latest VIA chipset drivers need to be installed. The
latest BIOS upgrade needs to be used.
Dis-able the Soundblaster Pro controller option in BIOS
as you are using a SB PCI card.
In volume controls otion make sure things aren't set at mute.
Please make sure drivers that are downloade will be compatable
with XP. Or look for a patch for compatability.
midi files are bringing you audio from a different source.
Luck.

Hey!!!
Wait!! Before you try reassigning IRQs, I have a question for you.
After you downloaded the updated drivers, did you use the 'update driver' option for the soundcard and then point it to the new updated driver?
If you just let Windows do it, then it more than likely used the old driver. You must force Windows to use the updated driver.
Go to Device Manager and choose Properties for the soundcard. Go to the Driver tab and choose to update the driver. Follow through and point it to the new downloaded driver.
If you have already done all that, then sorry, but I had to make sure.
I have had ticking sounds coming from the speakers before, too, and it was a driver issue.
Another possibility is your Live! card is not playing nice with the chipset. You may want to do a little research into that to see if there are known conflicts.
I'm running out of ideas, and again, I don't think this is an IRQ issue. And by trying to manipulate the IRQ resources, you may open up a can of worms. I mentioned it only as a last resort.
Did you remove the onboard drivers?
Good luck and post back with your progress. In the meantime, I shall ponder this problem some more.
Oh and another thought. Do you have any sort of electrical component, besides the computer of course, sitting next to your speakers? Are the speakers magnetically shielded speakers?
One final thought. How many PCI slots do you have, and have you tried manually moving the cards around? If your video card is AGP, then you probably shouldn't have the soundcard in the PCI slot right next to it. Also, I read somewhere that soundcards should be installed in the even numbered PCI slots.? Don't know how much truth there is to that. Try moving the soundcard around to different slots if you can.

Thank You for all your suggestions.
I have checked my speakers and they are working, they are not set on Mute. Everything checks out in the sound properties. No errors reported in Administrative Tools, Component Services or Event Viewer. Everything works great, Including my scanner. I did update the driver, after it was downloaded it was forced and the new driver is now listed. To my knowledge and Im certain there are no onboard drivers listed anywhere for my old sound card. I have 4 magnetically shielded speakers(Logitech)and one is close to my monitor however I read that is not an issue. The board had one AGP slot which I am using for my video card. 3 PCI slots.
1)vacant
2)SB Live Value
3)NIC card
Now I am going to try the rest of your suggestions and I will post back my progress. Again Thank You so much for your help.

out of curiousity are the logitec speakers model Z-540??
This will not help you any, I just wondered.
It's what I just bought a week ago (speaker system) and it kix butt!!
(in XP Pro as well as win98se)
what bothers me on your problem is that you say that these speakers worked OK in winME ??
cause if that's the case then it shouldn't be your chipset or whatever....
it's the same as you had before right ??
nobody snuck in durring the night and replaced another MB on you did they ??
heh
sorry.

Yup, I stand by my first inclination. It's a driver issue. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

you need to enable soundblaster in the BIOS for it to work. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I printed all posts and tried everything. My sound card finally worked after I swapped PCI slots. Great....everything worked.......well until I tried to use my NIC card in slot 2 where my sound card once was. It wouldn't work in that slot either. I have since called a tech and even he had no Idea of what was going on. I guess that remains one of Windows XP's little mysteries or perhaps my PCI slot got exhausted with the installation process and decided to have a wee nap. What I seriously cannot understand is why everything worked in windows Me and since windows xp it doesnt. So for now what I have done is enable my onboard sound on my bios and changed my jumper setting. I can at least have some sound other than that annoying clock.Thank you all for you help you have been really great.
