Graphics card = ATI 32MB All in Woder Radeon (VIVO)

ATI have now released a driver set for windows XP, which I have downloaded. But when I try to upgrade the drivers I am told that I must have "Standard VGA" drivers installed.

How is this done in WinXP?
I have tried un-installing all video drivers (from within safe mode & within windows proper) and tried to install the new drivers. Halfway through the installation I get the message about needing standard VGA drivers installed. I have tried un-installing all video drivers and then re-booting but XP re-finds the un-installed drivers. ATI do not reply to requests for help and the so called instructions for the installation of new drivers are built into the new file and cannot be printed seperately. Besides they are useless as the do not give instructions on how to set up standard VGA. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

Ok...I believe the procedure is the same for XP as 98...

Go to the display applet on the Control Panel and then select adapter...then change...when it asks to search, say no..select from list...and then Select "Standard VGA Drivers" from the list...and follow the prompts.

(You may need to look around on a couple of the menus/lists as I am not on an XP machine right now and can't look for the exact procedure....but that is the general area/idea how to do it)

Thanks for quick reply.

In XP there is no Standard VGA Drivers choice. The only choices are for screen resolution settings (eg 640x480 + refresh rates)
Have looked everywhere but cannot find it. Or is it that I have gone blind in my left ear? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Ok, seems like XP makes it difficult and only keeps the driver it is using handy...


I am coming up just as blank as you...so I guess we need to wait a little longer...

Windows XP

1. Restart Windows.
2. When the BIOS finishes loading, begin rapidly tapping the F8 key (do not hold it down). At some point, the Advanced Options menu appears.
3. Scroll down to Enable VGA Mode, and press Enter. Windows will start using VGA drivers only without changing your permanent settings.

As sea said a good call. That is the one place I would not have thought of looking and trying. I will give it a try tomorrow. Will the old drivers be over written when I do this I wonder. ATI is bad for driver conflicts when old and new reside together. Still good old ghost will put things back if things go wrong. Will let you know

Have finally managed to upgrade the video drivers. Did like this. learn to swear like a trooper http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif then pull out hair (if you have any left) the do as follows:

Choose lowest vid setting you can get in XP - then uninstall all installed drivers and software for card. DO NOT REBOOT AT ANY TIME then uninstall the card from device manager. Still no re-boot.

Now install new drivers and software as required. Now you can reboot. Walla! new drivers installed. When I tried doing it any other way XP kept finding the old drivers and re-installing them so new drivers conflicted. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
