I was using a external modem-merz and it was struck by lightning. So i bought a us robotics modem and it could not be detected in com port 2(the one i was using for the last modem). So i connected in com port 1 and all of the lights on the modem was on.although the modem can be detected, nothing else can be done - couldn't even comunicate with the modem.is something wrong with the modem or the com port? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

COM1 is normally also used for the mouse, so you're lucky it doesn't lock up your mouse, unless your machine has a PS/2 mouse, in which case COM1 is open, and the mouse uses IRQ 12, instead of IRQ 4 which is COM1.
If you have a PS/2 mouse, go into BIOS and disable COM1 in BIOS. I'm not entirely sure why, but if the COM port the modem is using is enabled in BIOS, the modem will refuse to work...Check my site below and look for the BIOS Survival Guide, it will have some good info on getting into and making changes in the BIOS. COM1 is serial port 3f8.

If you had everything...Where would you put it?
