I have a Pentium II 266 ASUS P2L97 motherboard dual-booting Windows 98 and NT Server (sp3). In Windows I installed an internal 3COM USR PCI Voice hardware modem without a problem (although it installed on COM 5, which I don't understand, because COM 2/4 is not in use. I understand COM 2 is reserved for the external connector, but why not COM 4? To my knowledge, nothing is using it.)

NT won't detect the modem. I tried using the modems applet and just running the NT driver setup program. If I install it without detecting it, it always installs on COM 2, which afaik is reserved for the external serial connector and can't be used. I tried using hyperterminal with the modem installed on COM 2, but can't connect. I tried disabling COM 2, adding COM 4 and 5 with the ports applet, all to no avail. Any suggestions?

Problem solved. I needed sp 4 to install the modem.
