Hi again.

You may remember I posted to the group early in January, when I had managed to damage the memory simms socket on my motherboard. Everyone was very helpful, so I'm posting my next couple of problems in the hope you will help again.

A friend of mine sorted the damaged socket problem, and now the computer will boot, load Win 98 and operate fine. The only problem is that whenever I boot, I get a 162 Configuration error, and I have to reset the BIOS settings. Has anyone got any idea what this error means, and how I can fix it ?

The second problem (which was the start of the whole thing in the first place) is that I am trying to install a network card in the computer. The drivers and installation seemed to go fine, but I could not attach to the network. (The card etc is compatible). I looked at the system properties for the card, and found a message to the effect that Windows stalled when trying to access this device, and will never try to access it again. It said I should try and update the drivers (which came with the card in the first place.) I uninstalled the card and started again. Now it just hangs every time it tries to locate the drivers. Please help.

The PC is a 3yr old Apricot MS540, P120, 16Mb, Pheonix BIOS.

Thank you,
Sharon

Load windows in safe mode ( usually you press "ctrl" key right before windows logo pops up to go to safe mode screen ). After you go to safe mode go to control panel, systems, device manager, then select the network adapter and remove it. That will remove the drivers. Now turn off the pc and then start again and windows should find the new device and you can go back to control panel, systems, device manager etc to update the driver.

See that works. Not sure about 162 config error. Someone else may knows about it.

It may need a new battery to allow it to save the BIOS settings.

Error Codes with Problem Source Listing (http://www.pctusa.com/pcerror.htm) says 100-199 means system board problems. This might be related to the memory slot damage.

rkmca has a good suggestion, Safe Mode can also be accessed by pressing the [F8] key when you see a line that says Starting Windows or Verifying Pool Data

Thank you all for your advice. I'll let you know if it works as soon as I have visited my daughter at Uni (which is where the computer is now).

Sharon,
Do you have two spots for your mouse ie: a serial port and a PS/2 slot?
If you do you will need to disable one, preferalbly disable the serial mouse and enable the PS/2 Slot. I belive this was an error I had at one time and that's how I got rid of it, even though I was still able to use my mouse. If you don't have a serial and PS/2 slot then this may not be the problem.
