Very regularly (but not always) when I print (Epson Stylus 600) my computer hangs and it needs a reset. I am running Win 98 and have installed the driver recommended by the Epson support people (off the Win 98 CD). LPT1 is set to EPP in the bios and there are no resource conflicts. I have noticed of late that I generally have a corrupt file somewhere when Norton check things out on reboot (the last two times in cleanup.log in the Outlook Express directory).
I have also had my hdd scramble itself a while ago resulting in an fdisk and format so the install is fresh but I am wondering if my printer is at fault or whether I should look elsewhere.

Welcome, reg! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif You say Norton finds errors when you reboot. Have you tried starting your computer in Safe Mode and running Scandisk from there? I use Norton Utilities 4.0, and both Win Doctor and Disk Doctor occasionally miss errors that Scandisk picks up. Norton sometimes won't let you run Scandisk in normal Windows mode, which is why I have to run it in Safe Mode.

If that doesn't help, the only other suggestion I can offer is to reinstall the printer driver again. My HP Deskjet drivers freak out from time to time and I have to reinstall them. I suspect they somehow become corrupt. This doesn't seem likely in your case since you've just done a fresh install, but I can't think of anything else to try.

Troubleshooting Windows Driver Setup (http://support.epson.com/webadvice/wa0250.html) from the Epson website might give you some ideas.

Hopefully, someone else here can give you more suggestions!

A couple of suggestions:
Go to start/settings/printers double click your printer and select properties under "printer" look for something like "details" ultimatley what you're looking for is "spool options". More than likely this is set to EMF change this to RAW. I believe this has something to do with the way the printer buffers the data to be printed. The EMF (I think) is an enhanced setting that is trying to buffer all the details/format that you are printing. I had problems with the HP 932C under a USB connection and the HP support site listed this a common problem and by switching to RAW you are not giving up quality or anything. This occurred while I was trying to print a very large document. I haven't had any problems since changing to RAW.
A note on using Scandisk...I learned here or at www.annoyances.org (http://www.annoyances.org) that the scandisk ".ini" file could be modified to make several passes along with several other options. These additional passes could find problems that may have been missed with just one pass. These modifications will only take place while running Scandisk from the DOS prompt. Use find to locate the scandisk .ini and it will explain in the notepad document how to modify the settings. I use it now, but I still use Norton's Disk Doctor, too. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try the suggestions for scandisk. I have tried the RAW format before. From what I can gather, basically it spools the printing job before sending it to the printer rather that starting the job while still spooling (EMF). Either way my computer still went napping.

The reason that I'm also fretting about my hdd is that it completely corrupted itself once and keeps losing bits now (although I know this is pretty "normal" http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif .

http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/redface.gif I also forgot to mention that I also had some problems for a while convincing my computer to get on the move. I would hit the power switch and hear the hdd spin up but nothing else would happen. I reseated everything in the computer and haven't had that problem since.

Anyway, thanks again.
