I dont know much of anything about computers. A friend of mine was having a lot of problems with her windows98 on her gateway pc. Someone suggested we reinstall windows 98 and we did. Everything is working fine, all her error messages are gone. Except that she can not sign on aol because it will not recognize the modem. She used to get on line fine before this. I think it has something to do with the settings. Or that Bios. We dont even know what kind of modem it is. I dont know what I'm doing. Someone please help.

What exactly is happening? Are you having problems when trying to dial out? If so, what are the error messages that you are receiving? Make sure that the com port the the modem uses (usually com 2) is enabled in the bios settings. You may need to go to start menu/control panel/settings/modems and go thru the configurations step-by-step to make sure that all of your settings are correctly selected. If it is a winmodem, you may need to reinstall the software (which should have been included with your computer package). If it is a seperate modem, then you may need to reinstall the drivers again. First and foremost, make sure that all of your settings are correct. Let me know how it goes.....

Has your friend tried having AOL detect the modem? On the sign-on screen for AOL, in the lower left-hand corner, is an option for "setup". Click on that, then find the "Detect Modem", or something to that effect. Click on that and AOL will search for the modem, and hopefully find and configure it.
Good luck.

Here we go again...
If it's a Gateway, it's most likely a winmodem. Winmodems must be installed using the software installation, rather than by simply detecting the modem and installing drivers. Check the driver files for a setup.exe or install.exe and run it, and make sure COM2 (3f8) is enabled in BIOS.
