on my keyboard whenever the letter 'e' is pressed nothing seems to happen, but when i press the key a bit more enrgetic four or five 'e's appear

Too many coffee spills...consider getting a new keyboard. They can be cleaned, but it's a pain, and new ones aren't expensive.

I agree with Pete...this is a great opportunity to get that new keyboard you've been wanting. As this could be the start of a lot of problems with your present one. In the meantime though, if this is the only key causing you a headache it can simply be popped off of the board and cleaned for a quick fix. However, do not attempt to remove any of the larger keys (space bar, enter etc.)as they are a pain to re-attach.
