I am experiencing trouble receiving faxes. My software is called the Faxwizard and my modem is a US Robotics 56k Win INT #2. I have no problems sending faxes. When I am receiving a fax the connection is made. I know this because I can hear it and my program tells me it is 'negotiating parameters'. Suddenly the connection is lost and a message window appears. The window title is 3cmlnkw. The message states that this program has performed an illegal operation. My modem then goes into hiding. If I ask the fax sender to retry the modem doesn't even pick up, and if I try to go online I can't get a connection. When I go to the device manager to check the modem status it says the device is working properly. I must shutdown and reboot to re-establish connectivity. Any ideas??!

I don't know anything about that fax program, but check the settings, check the help files, and look up their website to see if they have a FAQ page that may have some info that will help.

I had to set mine, Cheyenne's BitWare, to recieve in fax/data only mode, instead of voice/fax/data. In voice/fax/data mode it would act similar to yours, except that it wouldn't "hide" the modem. Just disconnected every try. I'm not sure, but I think it was still looking for a voice signal...Check your settings, might be something similar.

Thanks Paleo Pete for your reply.
I did a little research and discovered that one of the driver files listed in the driver details for my modem in the Device Manager is titled 3cmlnkw.exe. Could this be corrupted somehow? I don't know how to determine this and I tried to download an update but Windows insists I have the most current version in use. The fax program (FaxWizard) is simply just that and has no voice or data options. The connection parameters on the modem are the defaults (databits-8, parity-none, stopbits-1). My OS is Windows 98se. Any other ideas?

Can't think of anything else, without being able to reconfigure the program...

You might consider a different fax program, the shareware version of BitWare is available at several of the more popular download sites, and works very well, and you can check around, others might be available that work too. I have BitWare and Quick Link III, both work fine, but both have options to set the configuration to whatever recieve mode is desired.

It might also be related to it being a winmodem...I'm not sure about any issues related to faxing, but they have tons of problems with internet connections.

Hey Bern, I found this link while doing a search for that file on Google: http://cpcug.org/list/lwgate.cgi/SENIORSIGD-L/archives/seniorsigd-l.log0010/Author/article-14.html
I think it relates to your situation as well. I thought it funny that you referred to an ".exe" file as a driver file leading me to do the search. Hope there is some help for you there.
