Every time I want to connect to Internet I have to unplug the phone cord from the wall and plug it back in and run back to the computer to connect right away. If I don't do it right away I get "no dial tone" message. I have Dell computer, WIN98 and US Robotics WIN modem. Is there a help for it, or I have to keep "exercising"?

1. Open My Computer and double click Dial Up Networking, right click your internet connection icon and click Properties. Click the Configure button beside your modem and click the Connections tab and uncheck the box that says Wait for Dial Tone Before Dialing.
2. Use the Winmodem for a paperweight, target or pooper scooper and get a hardware modem. Winmodems are absolutely the worst except maybe HCF modems...They use your system resources instead of a processor on the card, get slower and unreliable connections, are more difficult to install, and sometimes do weird things like make you run unplug the cord to connect...

If you had everything...Where would you put it?

hey Pete,
A HSP56 MicroModem..... is this one of those diguised winmodems ??

lol...so I cant spell...
Okay, I'm not Pete but maybe I can help clear something up: any internal modem (MODulator/DEModulator) that has HSP in its name IS a "winmodem" (although that is a trademarked name) or software modem. The HSP stands for Host (your CPU) Signal (data your trying to send/receive) Processing. Some internal modems and all external modems have a special chip to handle that function. Therefore they usually cost much more than $20-$50 (US) and as Pete says are generally more reliable, but the externals do require a free comm port and some desktop space. (some of the newest computers do not have any comm ports showing on the outside of the case although the connections may exist on the motherboard)
One other thing check to maske sure that you have the modem connected properly the connection should be to the LINE jack on the modem not Phone (many newer internal modems automatically disconnect the phone jack when the modem attempts to dial out)
You may want to check out this link a lot of good info on troubleshooting modem problems.

Thanks Pete,
In the past 9 months I have had enough modem problems that I've tried to find out as much as I can about them, so now I'm just trying to pass on what I've learned.
