I recently downloaded a file from a website. After successfully downloading the file and when I restart my computer, the WIN 95 stops at the WIN95 screen and does not load further even though there seem to be disk activities and the moving shades below the WIN95 screen is there.
I tried to reboot the system with my startup disk but I couldn't get pass running the programs stored on the floppy. There seem nothing in the floopy that could enable my external CD ROm( I am using the Argosy CD980 external CD ROM.) using PCMCIA card connection to work. I would like to reload my WIN95. What can I do to get it going? Please anybody, help

You didn't say whether you installed this program, but it sounds like you did, and it caused problems. Scanreg is not available in win95, so you have to restore the registry the hard way.
Get to the A:\> prompt using a boot disk, and get a directory listing of the registry files in the windows\system folder. Those are system.dat and user.dat, you will need to rename them.
To get there, from the C:\> or A:\> prompt, type dir_c:\windows\system\system.* using a space in place of the underscore ( _ ) used here. That should give you a list of all files named system.xxx. Write those down, with dates. You'll find system.dat, system.old, system.da0 etc. then the same for the user files. dir_c:\windows\system\user.* write those down with dates.
Once you have those listed, pick the ones with the latest dates before the problem occurred, and start renaming. I'll use system.xyz for the extension of the one you want to use, and .abc for the one to change the existing files to. Use your initials for that one, or .abc as used here, just so you KNOW what you changed system.dat and user.dat to.
Here goes:
ren_system.dat_system.abc will rename system.dat to your initials.
ren_system.xyz_system.dat[/b] will rename the one you want to make it the current file.
ren_user.dat_user.abc ditto...
ren_user.xyz_user.dat will finish up.
That should rename your registry files, and give you a recent usable registry, and should allow the computer to boot up. Make sure you rename registry backups that have the same extension and dates.

Hi,
Many thanks for your response.
I looked at the dir listing and I do
not find any system.dat or user.dat files on my start-up diskette.
What I find are these files:
Autoexec,Command,Drvspace.bin,EBd,Ega.cpi,Fdisk,Fi nramd,andsetramd.
Do these files make any sense?
Regards

The files you want are not on the start up disk, they are on the hard drive. Type C: then [Enter] to change to C drive.
