I have a PC running Windows ME (I know) and my husband a Mac G4/400. We both access a DSL connection through a common hub (LiveWire 10/100 5-port dual speed) with no special configuration. I installed the TCP/IP protocol and bound it to my NIC and I was on. The cable to the DSL "modem" uses the uplink port of the hub.
Now we're trying to share an HP 2100M printer through that same hub. The printer has a network adapter and is connected to the hub as if it were just another workstation. (i.e. the printer is not connected directly to either of our computers) As soon as the printer was connected to the hub, it showed up on the desktop of my husband's Mac. I went to HP's website and downloaded a Win ME driver, but when I try to install it, I run into this problem. If I try to install as a local printer, the printer wizard asks me for a port - COM1, COM2, LPT1, etc. - and I don't have an answer. If I try to install as a network printer, the printer wizard asks me for a path or allows me to browse "my network places". I don't know the path, and when I browse I don't see the printer.
What are we doing wrong? Everybody we talk to says this should work. Boy, do I feel dumb!
Thanks,
Melanie
