Hi,
Sounds like maybe a driver issue. It might be worth a try to download and install the latest drivers for that printer. www.hp.com (http://www.hp.com)
Another thing you could try is to boot up in Safe Mode. Go into Device Manager and remove all instances of printers. It could be a ghost driver issue. After you have removed all printers, reboot in normal mode and let Windows find and re-install the printer.
Good luck.

addman,
I don't want to get you mad or anything but I was wondering are there any other problems, beside the printer and cd, with this machine since the format?
If so I think that they may be signs of a bigger problem than the individual ones, a bad install of Windows (does happen every so often). In any case, if you try to repair each one then I would doubt the longevity and stability of this install. Also after the install did update the drivers for your devices (video, sound, printer) or add any new ones. Are the chipset drivers the same version as before the install or the default?

well, it could be a bad install of windows, even though those are the only two problems. see, my windows disc kinda got all scratched up, so i got one of those scratch remover things rather than buy another copy of windows, but there may have been a few scratches left on it...it look a few cleans just to get it to install at all
I would hazard a guess then that one or more of the cab files are in thearea of those scratches, try reinstalling the drivers for the printer and then copy the contents of the cd to the hard drive (on a separate partition from the one you are using), then any time you need to add hardware just direct it to where you copied the files to. Ideally this should be done first and then install from that partition......
