New build VA503+ with Amd 500 WD hard drive Us Robotics Modem and Creative Sound Card. System running OK Windows 98SE installed. Sound card and Modem both installed to motherboard. When I try to use the install disk provided by manufacturer both with the cards installed and out of the system I get a message that Winmodem Installer cannot be found and to insert disk supplied by computer manufacturer. I have also downloaded latest drivers for the devices and tried to load them manually by pointing Windows to there location. When I do this Windows says the drivers for the devices are not located either on the floppy, zip, or CDRom drive I do (Ihave tried the drivers on all three) Thanks for the help

Try this: Go to My Computer/Control Panel/System/Device Manager......look for "?"'s or Unknown Devices.......Remove them. Now reboot and let Windows re-find these devices.....THEN put the correct driver disks in and the drivers should be able to be located on the disks by either "browsing" or by the "Install" icon. The modem will show up as a PCI Communications device and the sound card as a "multimedia" device when WIN finds them. Hope this helps.

Like Randy said, you may need to "browse" for them. They also may not be something obvious, if there is a Win98 folder on the disk give that a try.

Welcome, lockdown! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Was the download either a .ZIP file or a self-extracting .EXE file? If so, the files must be extracted before you can use them. Check the manufacturers' web sites for hints or instructions.

Sound card should be no problem, as long as it's unzipped, which has already been suggested. Check Device manager in safe Mode and be sure you don't have multiple devices showing up under either modem or sound card. If multiples do show up, remove all copies of the device(s) and start over...with unzipped sound card drivers.

The modem is a winmodem, and can't be installed by the Hardware Wizard. It has to be installed using the setup.exe or install.exe within the driver files. Run that and it should install fine. The hardware wizard didn't find the driver because it wasn't there, just the software program to install it. That program installs the actual driver, which is embedded in the installation software. You might have to physically remove the modem from the motherboard to install the software, then shut down and put it back in, some work that way. Check the manufacturer's website, they should have some info too.

I contacted USR support and they went through several different fixes with me some of which have been mentioned by the forum help and none worked. The tech could not figure it out and finally came to the conclusion that the problem was with Windows and that I should contact them. I have the full version of 98se and have it installed on other systems and have never had any problems installing anything. I actually took 98 ut of the system and reinstalled it and everything seemed to install OK but the origonal problem is still there. Thanks for the help

I think Pete hit it on the head : The hardware wizard didn't find the driver because it wasn't there, just the software program to install it.

the problem isn't with windows, it is still your modem software. As Pete has pointed out, the software to install the drivers for this are not present, and won't be until you physically get and install them.

Had you also done as suggested and completely remove the modem and try re-installing ??

edit: or better yet, do yourself a favor and get a REAL modem http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif (hardware modem) as the winmodem are really only 'half' a modem.

I had a simular problem with a older modem under win95 this past weekend. After reseating it in a different slot things went better for me. The device manager would prompt me to install the driver from a specific location but wouldn't find it so I kept selecting the "A" drive and after a few times it finally accepted it.
