I have an older 100mhz computer, was using it mostly for email, I decided to add a printer to it and ran into problems, 1st the on board port for the printer needed an adapter to hook up a standard printer cable, also the port did not seem to be recogonized by the system, so I couldn't get the printer to install. I had a extra serial, parallel (I/O)card around and installed this into an ISA slot. Hooked the printer up - it worked - modem still worked - everything seemed OK but the A drive didn't work, moved the A drive cable to the card I just installed for the printer, then the printer worked, the A drive worked but the modem would only dial out but not make a connection. The device manager (Win 98) does not show and conflicts. Any ideas - I did look in the BIOS setup but didn't see anything that I should change also does anyone know what FDD is in the BIOS (chipset section) Thanks

The I/O card has a Serial port (probably Com 1 IRQ 4) which is the same as your modem. You need to DISable the serial port on your I/O card for modem to work. You do it with the jumpers on the card.
By the way.......you would get MUCH better performance if you ran the computer in Win95 ver. B........98 is too big and slow for a P-100 http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Thanks,, I can certainly try that the modem is showing up on com 3 IRQ11
It is interesting though When I installed the card and the printer everything worked modem & printer but the A drive did not work so I hooked up the A drive to the card then it worked the printer worked but the modem would only dial not connect.

If the modem is on Com 3 IRQ 11...then trust me, it's not the I/O card causing the problem.....It's the fact that you are trying to use a PCI software modem in too slow a system!!!! The modem you have put in there is designed for a 166 mhz processor or faster and usually wont work at ALL in a P-100 system. You need a HARDware modem for that system.
If the modem was working prior to all of these changes, it was probably the only device using I/O resources and might have worked [check the system REquirements for that modem]...

Thanks, Actually it is an ISA modem and the conflict seemed to be when I added the I/O card I picked up a 2nd floppy disc controller which took the last of the resources - (also has a sound & video card, CD & 2 HD's) In device manager I deactivated the 2nd controller and assigned that IRQ to the modem and believe it or not everything works - It is really a slow system not my main computer, but one I've kept around for awhile.

hows it going
heres' one for you, 2 months ago we purchased a new system from dell, 1000mhz penIII, came with Me, 128mb ram, etc.
this pc is replacing an old piece of junk. it will be used for the company payroll only. ADP payroll software (online). this software did not support Me (did not know this prior to purchase)reformat to 98x,then they say (ADP) COM5 on the modem also cannot be used (understandable)
I and a few others cannot find a way to change the COM PORT uninstall reinstalled still com5, added a second modem it grabbed com6.
there are no settings for com ports in the BIOS that i can find DELL has different BIOS setup,
any ideas appreciated
