help!
having some trouble here and i'm hoping someone can help out.
bought a dell for the office, we will be using it for payroll only.
the software is called ADP payroll. it is alittle out dated but we have no choice but to use it at this time. adp does not support ME which what was on this new DELL, reformatted to 98x. also have a u.s. robotics v90 56k using com5 ADP says it will not work with there software until they upgrade which is planned beginning of fall. can only use coms1-4.
I am unable to find a way to change the com port, i uninstalled, reinstalled still com5, added a 2nd modem a conexant and it is using com6, cannot find a way to disable comports in BIOS, under modem prop. there is no manual settings that i can find, Dell says there is a down arrow to change coms in Me, but since the reformat they do not want to help troublshoot.
i checked out some other pcs' w/ ME but they did not have no down arrow.
I am at a dead end. also we are on a LAN but ADP requires dial-up. so i am stuck with it.
any info much appreciated.

It sounds like both modems are Winmodems (a modem that replaces some of the hardware with software to control the functions of the modem). The best bet would probably be an external modem hooked up to COM1, and the removal of the internal modems.....

COM5? COM6? What all is in that machine that's using COM1 through COM4?

Hey Firewire,

When you install the modem you can choose which port to install it to. ( choose to "select from list" to get this option. If your modem is not on the list displayed, choose "have disk". This works for ME/NT/2000 and should work on 98 as well) In fact you could install the modem to all ports. Then you would have 5 "modems" to choose from for your ADP dialup profile.
