I passed my old Desktop computer (Windows 95, Pentium II) on to a friend who is now unable to log on to the Net. Error message received:
The modem failed to respond. Make sure it is properly connected and turned on. If it is an internal modem or is connected verify that the interrupt for the port is properly set.
As far as I can make out it is properly connected and under COM1 is this information:
Interrupt 4
Address 3F8
UART: NS1655OAN
Standard 300 bps
Identifier MDMGEN 3.
Is there anything else missing? Any idea why PC cannot be connected to the net? Thanks for your help.

Might have to set it to a different IRQ. Some modems wont work on different IRQS. You must know the setting(IRQs) that the modem will work on, usually in the manual or at the manufacturers website. Try putting it on COM2 if you have one. But if its a legacy device you can set it up manually(make sure nothing is using that devices resources or you will have a conflict), does the modem have jumpers on it. If it has jumpers its a legacy device( I think) but if its a plug n play you want have to set any jumpers. Make sure when you set it to another IRQ or COM port that jumpers on the modem are set to the right Com port and right IRQ or it will not work. However if your friend hasnt change any thing since you gave him the cpu and the COM port work before on COM1 maybe its a bad phone line or phone jack try different phone jacks or phone lines. Hopefully one of this methods works if not just tell me what happen.

The thing that jumped out at me was that it was detected as a "Standard Modem" and shown as a 300 bps modem........surely that isnt what the modem is........a 300 baud? So, I would remove the modem from Control Panel/Modems and reinstall it myself hopefully with the drivers that came with the modem.....If you get the same error after a good install, chances are its a dead modem.

Sea69 and Randy TX thank you very much for your help. Have checked out the site Sea69 mentioned. Shall pass on the information to my mate who will hopefully make sense of it all. If not, don't worry I'll be back.
