i'm running a asus a7v mobo with thunderbird 900 chip and win 98se, after about 2 hours, computer locks up. was told it was a heat problem, sent machine back for repairs. they said everything worked fine, sent me back the computer. i tossed my 2 hard drives and 2 cd drives back in and the problem happened again. would setting my cd jumpers to master/slave affect this? i'm not sure if they have the correct settings. this problem is driving me crazy! HELP!!!!

Couple of thoughts:
Is the Power supply AMD certified?
Power cable is not loose is it?
Your repair shop may not see the full picture if your putting 4 IDE devices into that machine...all heat generating and possibly constricting air flow.
Not sure that the misconfig of the ide jumper settings would get you two hours into use...I would think you would get a "device not found" error or something similar earlier on than that.

Bassvax has some good points there. Also, do you have a case fan? A power supply fan alone may not be enough air flow to keep things cool. What kind of video card are you running? Some performance cards can really put out heat and also load the power supply.

I am in the process of setting up a recently upgraded system, AMD Athlon 800Mhz on a KT7-RAID Board (RAID function is disabled). G200 Matrox graphics card, 2X 128MB PC100 RAM, Adaptec 2940 SCSI Card, and several SCSI & IDE drives. Windows 98se...
Now the very same problem may come up the second the system is powered on, to about 6 hours into using it without any difficulty. The whole system COMPLETLY blocks. All LEDs go on, no drive responds to 'eject', the screen goes into powersaving, and neither the 'reset' or 'power' buttons work. To get out of this state I have to pull out the power cord, as the system presponds to NOTHING else. As I said, this comes anywhere from 'power on' to several hours of use, and drives me absolutly INSANE!
The most obvious problem I would see here is the RAM. I have replaced that with other PC100's, PC133's and 66's. Same or other problems...
Overheating? The case is open one sided, has 2 hard disk coolers, system fan, and powersupply fan. Plus the problem my come right away on power-on, after being shut off for hours.
I have gone through all the BIOS settings countless times, and disabled everything that enhances performance, has to do with powersaving, etc...
I am completly hopeless, and by now believe that there must be some physical damage on the main board, yet I don't understand why it may run for several hours...
I cannot deliver that computer to any service, as it is put together completly by myself, and the components are bought in different stores and countries.
I would strongly appreciate if anybody can help me with this!

(How do I find out if the power supply is AMD compatible??)

DOn't have much idea what the original problem might be, but I do agree with the above that it's a good possibility it's heat.

Holding the power button down for about 5 seconds should shut the computer down completely.

Check the AMD site for a list of compatible power supplies. You'll probably have to look it up by your CPU model.

If you havent gotten the Abit update (12-15-00) it might help. I would try another cpu in the mb if you have one to make sure you aren't getting erratic performance from cpu chip. Good luck!

I have a similar problem but not sure if mine is directly attributable to overheating. If you're willing to spend a few bucks to fix potential overheating problems, see this link: http://www.extremeoverclocking.com/reviews/cooling/Video_Card_Comparison_1.html The content of this link isn't important, but it contains links to about 4 different vendors who sell cooling products - from CPU/Video chip coolers/heatsinks, to additional system coolers that fit in extra drive bays or vacant card expansion slots. It might be worth a look. Remember however, that even cooling fans generate some heat thru power consumption, so don't over do it.

Here's my problem for the group's consideration: without warning (randomly) my system freezes and only the mouse pointer moves around. This happens no matter what program I'm running (word processing, surfing the net, etc.) anywhere from 3 minutes to 30 minutes into a session. I can't even access the program manager and have to do a reset or power down (very ungraceful). I have plenty of mem (128MB) and have tried each stick of 64MB individually so I don't think it's that (problem still persists). I'm not a gamer and don't overclock so I don't think I'm over taxing my system. I've got an AMD K-6 II 450, Shuttle 597Hot MB, running Win98. My video card is a Jaton w/ 32MB mem and an nVidia Riva TNT II chip. Cooling may be a problem and I've recently order a cooling fan for the video card (only has heat sink now). Could it be some resource conflict or software problem?? Thanks.

For sure its a heat prolbem reid and the crew helpme out a few weeks ago. you can go to www.accubyte.com (http://www.accubyte.com) and get AMD fans plus i would invest in two case fans.
