When I try to connect to my scanner using paperport deluxe 7.0 software, I get an error message: The SHELL32.DLL file is linked to missing export SHLWAPI.DLL:SHRegGetUSValueA. There is a shlwapi.dll in the Paperport folder which is Shell Light-weight Utility Library. I've never had a problem with connecting to the scanner before, but today I tried to scan from a program on a CD using the scan command on that program. If shlwapi.dll is still in the program, why isn't it being recognized?

You said...
...I tried to scan from a program on a CD using the scan command on that program...
If you can give more details, preferably a list of the steps, it might be easier to help.
Especially the part about "scan from a program on a CD".

The program is called "The Day You Were Born" and after entering a birthdate, it displays a page with news about that day and year which then can be printed or scanned using buttons on a toolbar on the top of that page. When I clicked on the scan button, the scanner went through a normal cycle, but did not display the image on the monitor. When I tried to manually access the scanner, that is when I got the error message. Also, paperport displayed a message saying "a device attached to the system is not functioning". There were no steps other than that.

You're not understanding the principle involved.
The scanner will only scan printed material or other objects you can place on the scanner bed.
It will not scan screen images. You must first print the page with the "The Day You Were Born" program.
Or hold the scanner up to the monitor. NOT!!! JOKE!!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

ok, ok, you got me! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif But how can I get the scanner to recognize SHLWAPI.DLL? I've restarted a couple times and it doesn't reload at startup, and I still get the error message.
You may ahve to unistal and then reinstall the drvers for it.....
Usually (sometimes you need to remove it from device manager) you go into add/remove programs and look for the driver and then remove it, while your at you may want to look for updated drives and if there are updates follow the installation procedure inclided with them. If it is a USB scanner you may be able to get to "reintialze" the driver by unplugging it and rebooting without the scanner attached and then plugging it in and rebooting again (if it will allow a 'hot plug' you may not have to reboot).

Randy -- I was gonna put 'Lay the monitor face-down on the scanner' in there too!
Too risky. I may be a smart a** sometimes, but even I have my limits. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Doughboy -- Just funnin' you. Hope you solved your problem. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

ok mjc, the scanner has the printer connected to it and then it connects to the printer port on the pc. I removed the program and the port driver while in safe mode and restarted and reinstalled the program. When I restarted after the installation, the error came back.
