precisely, what modem is it??
I ask because depending on that- we can tell you the easiest way to re-install it.
if it is a hardware modem, you can just uninstall and then re-install it, or let windoze 'find' it........ if it is a PC-TEL.. HSP..etc (software modem) then you will need the install floppy, or drivers/software that makes it work.. and need to re-install...

Again, it depends on the type of modem, hardware or software, but I think the best way to go may be to boot into Safe Mode and remove it, reboot and reinstall it. Look up drivers for it if possible, and you need to know if it's hardware or winmodem, the installation depends on that.
For a hardware modem simply reboot and let Windows find it. If necessary you can update the drivers later.
For a software modem, you'll have to install the software using the setup.exe or install.exe file that comes with the drivers. In many cases you also have to physically remove the modem, install the software, then put the modem back in.
In either case unzip any driver files you download before trying to install them.

Sorry Sea, think I have to disagree on this one. This Page (http://www.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/frameit/FrameIt.cgi?Url=http://www.dynalink.com/english/info/support.html) I located through WinDrivers (http://www.windrivers.com) lists Lucent, Conextant and PC Tel as the chipsets available. All very likely to be winmodems...
Roel: Try to look up info from that page on your modem, and check the chipset on the modem to see which one you have. It will be a square chip somewhere on the card with the company name and a number on it, usually about 1" square. I couldn't get the driver page to load, but see if you can find the proper driver for it and run the setup.exe or install.exe file after unzipping the driver file. You might have to remove the modem before installing the software.
Boot into Safe Mode and remove all modems found in Device manager first. Write down what modems are listed, that may give us a clue what type of modem it is. Post that before removing or changing anything so we'll have a better idea what to do.

Thanks Pete and sea69.. Here is the lates I spend almost 5hrs doing all the things you said but nothing happened and I didn't see any progress. When I boot into safe mode, I tried to uninstall the modem but I can't. its giving message and warning that Im about to removed the modem. then I click yes to confirm. But still I can see the modem install in my system. As I said before Im not able to view the properties of the modem. And for some reason I lost the modem Icon in my control panel ( I don't know how). I tried to re install my windows ME but in the middle of installation its asking for some missing file (something like install file) which I don't know where to find. Another thing I tried is to fullout the card and changed it to another slot. Then I start the machine again the windows detected the new hardware but after installing the drivers it says this message (canot read port name from the registry). Just for some other details Im getting this message too. "tapisrv error" and this one "NAVW32 has caused error in NAVW32.exe" i think the second one is norton anti virus. (if im not mistaken) Im sorry if Im giving you guys a hard time but I really need to solve this. as far as I know my modem is dynalink and its mentioned some Rockwell name. thanks again and if you need more info just let me know pls.
24hrs fast and still I didn't get any reply from you guys. Pls help me regarding this..
You'll probably have to boot into safe mode to remove all the modems found under device manager, you can get into safe mode hitting <f8> while booting, it will bring up a menu, choose safe mode.
A list of WinME troubleshooters here (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q288/8/38.asp)
Try disabling NAV when the insatall process is going on, also you may have to reinstall NAV, but wait on it until we see if we can get the modem fixed....

this may sound drastic, but you could open the case and physically remove the modem.
and then uninstall the software if need be, or see if windows will find it.. but again winME is UNpredictable. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

So at present I got it done modem is working fine I can access again internet.. But another problem is my Sound Card Im not able to used it.. What I mean is its totaly can't be used ... "any suggestion???"
yes. But you probably won't want to do it.
re-install Win98se. If you really need to upgrade something I would wait for winXP, as ME is really not very much of an 'upgrade' even when is works perfectly. But enough on that because............
WinME works fine for some people.. even excellent and they are happy. I will note that from the majority of these people that I have personally heard that like and have had a good experience with this OS, most of them had the full RETAIL install.
There are a few people on this board that have had good experiences with it as well, and they can most likely help you with driver conflicts, as they may have either had these problems too, or know of this tendency. (even if they haven't had the problem themselves.)
had you done a search on google (http://www.google.com/)??
problems+sound blasterlive+WinME
seems you're not the only one to have problems with this sound card.
by far.
additionally, I am pretty sure that you require service upgrades to ME from M$.. yours is just the basic upgrade from win98se, so there have since been 'fixes'released for some known ME problems.
I can empathize with your problem, but personaly would trashcan anything that gave me this much trouble.

This assumes that you have a good working boot disk. And that you wish to start with a freshly formatted hard drive.
With your computer turned off, insert the boot disk.
Turn on the computer.
When the computer's booted up do the following...
type FDISK /MBR hit enter
(this destroys the master boot record and re-creates it. You should not see anything on the screen.)
type FORMAT C: /U /S hit enter
(this will format your hard drive and "SYS" it. This means install the system files needed to boot up. When it's done you may enter a name for this drive if you wish.)
Reboot the computer with the boot disk.
Type C: hit enter
Type MD CABS hit enter
Type X: hit enter
(where "X" is the drive letter for your CD-ROM make sure your Win98 CD is in the CD-ROM drive!)
Type CD WIN98 hit enter
Type COPY *.* C:\CABS hit enter
(what you've done is, you've made a folder called "cabs" on your hard drive, then copied all the files needed from your Win98 CD-ROM to that folder. This way you will install from your hard drive. Then, in the future if Win98 needs any files, it will automatically get them from there. Also I've found that some people have a problem getting their CD-ROM to be recognized by Win98. If that were to happen during the Win98 installation, you wouldn't be able to finish the install. This method avoids this problem.)
Reboot the computer without the boot disk. NOTE: If you're using an upgrade CD to do the install, skip step 10, and start the install while you're booted off the bootdisk, this way you will have CD-ROM support when Windows wants proof. At that point simply put your Win9x CD in, point to it in the browser, then put your install CD back in. Remember to remove the boot disk before the next reboot!
Type CD CABS hit enter
Type SETUP hit enter
here you go! just follow the on-screen instructions and you will successfully install Win98!
had you tried this ?

Thanks again sea69.. But I confused is the CD ROM automatically getting drive letter when it 'is newly install... let say iti s newly build PC when I format my HD to assigned as C: is the CD ROM gonna be D: with out giving any command
Paleo Pete

Yes, the win98 start up disk will allow you to boot with CD ROM support, it creates a RAMdrive with all the necessary utilities, and loads drivers for the CD ROM so you can install, then after Windows is installed the CD ROM will be automatically detected and given the next open drive letter. If you only have one hard drive with one partition it will be C and the CD ROM will be D. If you have 2 partitions, they will be C & D and the CD ROM will take E, etc.

Thanks pete now I fully understand..How about deleting files in my temp folder.. do you think it will harm my PC. I think most of this file are unzipped file from windows and mostly are installer which I don't need now . If I clear my temp folder... is there any effect in my windows operations.. thanks again
Paleo Pete

If you're going to format the hard drive that will completely delete everything on the drive. The Temp files will no longer be there after the format, so don't worry about them, they'll be gone when you finish.
If you have anything to want to save on the drive, do it before you format. That means pictures, documents, zip files downloaded, etc. All your programs will have to be reinstalled later from their CDs.

Shouldn't cause any problems, just make sure you don't empty the Recycle Bin for a few days, see how it runs first, then if it does OK you can empty the Recycle Bin. If it has problems you can then restore the files if you need to.
