I have an Asus A7v133 mobo, a US Robotics pci modem, and an intermittent problem. Sometimes when I log on it works just great. At other times, 30% to 40%, I just hear an annoying buzz and get an error message stating that there is no dial tone. It may remain this way for a few days and without even shutting down the puter it will begin to work again. I have tried numerous configurations including different slots, IRQ's, removed all other cards except video, and exchanged the modem for another new one, all to no avail. Can someone give me some insight or tell me what to do???

To me it sounds like the modem and the video card are taking the same IRQ are they on the same irq? This would be a cause of it not working all the time. Check in device manager to see if they are sharing one. I had a pci modem and it keep getting on the same irq as the video card. If its plug and play(modem) there is no way of changing the irq but if its legacy you can change it by going in device manger and under reserve resources and reserving the irq for that modem then put the modem on that reserve irq. Another option is getting a ISA modem instead of a pci this should solve the problem it did for me. Also modems are picky on which irq and and memory addresses they get on the right configuration should be in the modem manual but if you do not have one go to US Robotics website and the should have the manual. To find the the site go to driverguide.com and type in us robotics. You ll have to sign up to get the info though.

Any thing else connected to the phone line or the modem?

Have you checked the line with a phone to see if it is acting in a similar manner?

As requsted here is more of the stuff. I'm currently using IRQ 10 for my modem, with no conflicts, and IRQ 11 for my video card. The phone line is long and dirty but my other puter, running Server and cascaded from the problem puter, will always work just fine so I know the line is OK. I'm using I/O 1000/1007 for the modem and again with no conflicts. Anymore suggestions???
