When I log on to my ISP, I get the message that I am now connected at 57,600 bps. Although I realize this would be a dream come true, I know that it is impossible, and is a "ghost" of some kind. I have looked at My Computer>Dial Up Networking>AT&T Connection Services-Properties>Modem Configuration, and the Max. Speed is set at 57,600, but the "Only connect at this speed" box is unchecked. I know from past experience that the speed should be, and usually is, in the 46-50K bps range. Any suggestions as to how to get this reset to the actual, real connection speed would be appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome, lps! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

That speed only refers to the computer-to-modem connection,
not the modem-to-modem rate. In fact, if the drop-down box
has 115200 as a choice, you can and should select that.

If the 'Only connect...' box is grayed-out, your modem does not
support this feature. If checked, this would prevent fall-back
to a lower speed when establishing a connection.

Hello lps, http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

1st thing that came to mind is alot of people are a bit confused by the whole 56k bits/bytes/kbps/etc etc etc

If you think you can, or are trying to get your internet speed to a point at which you can download at 56k with a 56k modem <- Thats "Not" going to happen......

To try to simplify this a little, if you get "5k" downloads on a 56k modem your doing pretty good............and thats about all you can hope for

The whole thing where these isp's use those big numbers 57,600 etc etc is all just a game (A play on connection specs most people don't understand and alot of times its even an outright lie as well) They do it to make people feel like they're actually getting something hehe

Hope this helped a bit........
