Recently my dad's computer crashed. I tried unsuccessfully to "revive" it but to no avail.I bought a new hard drive and everything went smoothly except for the modem. This has been a problem for months and even with new modem it is still screwy.
I install software for the modem and that goes ok. But when trying to get it to dial out to connect to a server it get's kicked off. I tried the phone dialer today and the modem is unplugged from the phone line and it still thought it dialed out and connected to another computer. I am completely disgusted with this but promised my dad I would figure it out.
It is connected to COM4.

First go into Device Manager and check that there are no conflicts with other devices. Then open Hyperterminal, connect to COM4 and type "AT" at the command prompt. Your modem should respond with "OK". Now type "AT&C1&D2&W" again your modem should respond with "OK". Now type "ATDT5555555" (5555555 = the phone number you wish to dial.) The modem should go on line and dail the number.

I tried that and the computer won't let me do that. I am ready to give up on that comp and tear it down and use it for parts. I have spent too much time and money on it already. Thank you for helping.
