I have two computers, a Compaq and a generic machine I put together with help from a friend. The printer is a Compaq IJ900 and directly connected to Compaq computer. They are connected to each other with a "two-way" cable between their NIC cards. Drive sharing is a breeze. When we try to print "remotely" the following happens. The "remote" system will acknowledge the job being sent and shows the small printer icon in the system tray. The Compaq will bring up the printer status window. Sometimes the job will print. Most of the time the job will not print, and eventually a popup window will state that the printer has a timeout condition. If I restart the Compaq computer, the job, or any other queued after it from Compaq itself, will not print. I usually have to shutdown Compaq, power off CPU and printer, allow it to sit idle for a few moments, and power everything back up. After the Compaq computer is totally rebooted, I will get a message that states there are still print jobs in queue. Most of the time I have to cancel these out. About the only way to print from second system is to copy files over shared drives and print from Comapq computer as a local print job.
