View Full Version : How to re-assign a IRQ to a PNP device

Hello everyone,

Win98 always assign the same IRQ to 2 PCI devices on my PC, though
only 2 IRQs out of IRQ9-12 are used. I try to modify the IRQ in control
panel, but was told 'This resource setting cannot be modified'.
Win98 seems very stubborn. Anybody could let me know how can I modify
IRQ setting?

THanks in advance
Geff

I've tried reassigning interrupts so that certain devices (like PCI hard drive controllers) wont have to compete with other PnPs for the resource by changing the BIOS settings. When Windows boots up, however, the PnP enumurator (or something) throws the PnP devices into a "pool" and dynamically allocates interrupts as they are needed. (Not sure; I think that's what happens.)

If you're not having problems with your machine, I'd just say "that's the way it is http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif ".

I did have interrupt conflict problems with a certain Ethernet adapter during initial boot-up. The machine had no BIOS options for changing the interrupts, and trying different PCI slots was no help. I ended up installing the adapter in another machine.

P.S.: Interrupt 12 is reserved for the PS/2 mouse.

Amen to Kenja's reply...Win98 IS stubborn on changing IRQ's...esp if changing PCI slots doesnt work. I've had to replace devices at times to get everything working. One thing you might try is to REMOVE the device you can (like a sound card, modem or NIC) completely from the system (both physically and in "System" settings ....reboot...and shut down....and replace the device into the system. Sometimes i've seen win 98 se finally assign it a new irq when I do this.

One addition to the above info. Remove the device from Device Manager in Safe Mode, and remove ALL that are listed, so you don't still have references to older drivers lurking around to cause trouble later.

Here is a link to the PC Guide that describes PCI interrupts (on the fourth screen):
