View Full Version : No Dial-Tone detected

I'm trying to get my mother's modem working again from a distance and the phone bills are starting to mount.

Anyway, her modem started giving this message and I have tried everything I can think of to get it to work again.

Also, I have a phone running thru it and it is getting a dial tone.

Had her check every setting I can think of, unchecked "Wait for dial tone before dialing".

Tried using "Phone Dialer" but still no dial-tone detected.

Everything seems fine but still no dial-tone.

Unplugged the phone cord from modem for a couple of minutes, no good.

It's a Compaq computer, HP winmodem, running Win'98.

I'm starting to think the modem might have died but I have a nagging feeling that it's some stupid box that got accidently checked or uncheked.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Hacker

Did your mother have any new phone services installed like automated messaging? That is one service that will give that message. Any electrical storms in her area?

If none of these are the case, simply rebooting the pc will usually reset the modem. If that doesn't fix it then shut down, open the case, and re-seat the card in the slot. If that doesn't work, perhaps a complete removal and re-install would do it.

Remove the modem from Safe Mode, reinstal it. It's a winmodem so it'll have to be installed using the setup.exe or install.exe in the driver files, after unzipping, or from the Compaq CD. Sometimes you have to physically remove the modem to install the software, then reinstall the modem.

If that doesn't do it, the modem's fried, you'll have to get another one. Phone hooked to the modem will still get a dial tone when the modem is dead. Phone dialer should not, when it gets no dial tone it's not a good sign.

Check to see if RNAAPP is running when you do the 3 finger salute [Ctrl] [Alt] [Del]. If so, End Task on it and try to connect. That sometimes ties up the modem. It doesn't close when the modem shuts down an internet connection. There's another app that can do that, and I can't think of it, either it's too late or I have CRS...

Thanks for the replies.

Looks like I'll be taking a 3hr drive soon.

If any other ideas come up, let me know.

Once again, Thanks.
