I am running widows 98. I have a bearpaw 1200 scanner with usb cable, which worked fine until I had some fatal OE errors and crashed. After the crash my lexmark z12 printer also could not communicate with the computer.(also USB connection). The printer works fine after uninstalling the corrupted driver and re-installing, however, the scanner will not install. When I plug the scanner in, windows detects it, but says that it is an "unknown usb device". In device manager, it is listed as "unknown usb device", and has a red x imposed over it. when I check it's properties it says that it is disabled, because there is an improper driver, or other reason{code 22) After I click to enable the device, It shows up in device manager with a yellow exclamation point, which I believe means that there is a conflict. When I originally installed it, windows instantly recognized it as "bearpaw 1200 scanner" , and when I install my printer, windows recognizes it as "lexmark z12 usb"

If I try to use the scanner, I get a message "scanner not connected, please check cord", and then "scanner not ready"

can anyone out there help me with this problem?

Write down the marked devices from device manager, reboot into safe mode, go into device manager and remove any multiple copies of those devices (or all of them) and then reboot.
